For example, a decrease in the expression of hippocampal Bdnf mRNA has been reported during late-middle age in the presence of chronic stress [49] and brain pathology [50]. Conversely, the expression of the Bdnf gene within hippocampus has been shown to increase after external interventions, such as physical activity [72] and environmental enrichment [73].
