Abstract
Hyperlipidemia is a major modifiable risk factor for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly population. Although statin therapy remains the mainstay of treatment for hyperlipidemia in the elderly, other therapies, including exercise training, plant stanols and sterols, soluble fiber, and drug combinations (especially ezetimibe, niacin, and/or fibrates alone or combined with statins) are also effective and important lipid therapies for the elderly population.
