For the second year, the Ochsner Alumni Association presented awards for the top 3 Research Day abstracts authored by residents. The winners received certificates and cash awards at the annual alumni banquet and were recognized at the Research Day evening poster viewing and reception.
System Nursing Professional Development and Research presented the inaugural Nursing Research Award in 2012. The award is a rotating plaque that will be engraved each year with the winner's name.

Dharmendrakumar A. Patel, MD, received the first place Resident Research Award for his abstract “Which Echocardiographic Indexing Method for Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Best Predicts Mortality Risk in Women?”
Nicholas Zea, MD, received the second place Resident Research Award for his abstract “Epidural Use During Pancreaticoduodenectomy.”
Todd Rosenthal, MD, (left) received the third place Resident Research Award for his abstract “Collateral Benefits of Glycemic Control on Lipids.” Dr Rosenthal is pictured with one of his coauthors, Richard Deichmann, MD. Dr Deichmann is the Deputy Head of Students for The University of Queensland School of Medicine, Ochsner Clinical School, New Orleans.
Shelley Thibeau, PhD(c), RNC, (left) received the inaugural Nursing Research Award for her abstract “Exploring the Use of Mothers' Own Milk as Oral Care for Mechanically Ventilated Very Low Birth Weight Preterm Infants.” Presenting the award is Karen Rice, DNS, APRN, ACNS-BC, ANP, Program Director of the Ochsner Health System Center for Nursing Research.
