All articles published by Ochsner Journal are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers.
Articles in Ochsner Journal are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY). The original authors retain copyright, but content can be reused without permission or fee provided that the work is properly cited.
Attribution is required when reusing content from Ochsner Journal. For figures, we require attribution in both the figure legend and in the reference list. Our preferred citation format for figure legends is ©YEAR AUTHOR et al. Originally published in Ochsner Journal. https://doi.org/10.31486.##.####. For tables, include the full reference citation in the reference list and append the reference number to the table title. The format of the citations in the reference list should follow the citation format of the journal in which the article is being published.
Self-archiving and peer-to-peer article sharing are encouraged. No reuse limitations apply to reference lists. No permission is required for copying and distributing articles, republishing/reprinting/adapting tables or figures, or including articles in courses or meeting packets.
In short, the CC BY license lets you distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon a work published in Ochsner Journal, even commercially, as long as you provide the appropriate credit for the original creation.
For a full explanation of what is meant by the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, refer to the Creative Commons License Legal Code.
The CC BY switch is retroactive to the first issue of the Ochsner Journal published in January 1999. Prior to September 2019, Ochsner Journal was published according to the traditional all rights reserved copyright model under which authors transferred copyright to Ochsner Clinic Foundation. Consequently, all material at this site published prior to September 2019 is tagged with ©Ochsner Clinic Foundation. Manually changing all those copyright lines would have been prohibitively expensive, so we left them in place; however, all material at this site is free for use according to the conditions of the CC BY license.
