In a multicenter study, Groenewoud et al676,677 documented that HTK provided better protection against delayed graft function (DGF) in renal transplants than Euro-Collins' or UW solution, namely 24% versus 38% and 31%, respectively. This finding was subsequently confirmed for liver by Pichlmayr's group678 and for lung grafts by Barr et al.679 Ploeg680 asserted that HTK represented a useful, less expensive, alternative to UW solution. Henry et al,681 and subsequently Barber et al,682,683 noted the benefits on immediate renal allograft function of pulsatile perfusion during kidney storage, especially when using organs from high-risk donors.
